Family Dentist South Edmonton
Whether you are thinking about having a family, or you have a young family already, you should understand the benefits of seeing a family dentist in order to make the best decision for your family. You might ask: don’t family dentists and general dentists offer the same services? On the whole this is true, but it isn’t the services offered that make family practices so special, it’s the manner in which the services are delivered.
Family Dentists vs. General Dentists
Family dentists are general dentists that choose to dedicate their practice to offering competent care to family members of all ages. Since having young children is often the impetus for a parent’s interest in working with our family practice, our clinic is motivated to consider children in our décor and in the amenities we offer.
Children’s comfort is top priority to us, next only to safe and reliable treatment. After all, as a family clinic we strive to maintain long-term relationships with our families which means we want to go the extra mile to make a great impression. Starting a child’s oral health journey is an important time, so we are sure to allow children to acclimate to the environment at their own pace. This might mean meeting for a consultation prior to having their first check-ups or booking longer appointments to avoid any sense of rush. Gaining the trust of your family is important, and we pride ourselves on our ability to achieve the trust of our most discerning patients – kids!
Partnering with Parents
Dental appointments can be a stressful event for children and their parents, particularly when there is a procedure to be conducted. Our confident and compassionate bedside manner along with our team of our helpful support staff works to meet your child’s needs for comfort to minimize stress on parents, who may, themselves, have anxiety where it comes to the dentist.
We recognize the need to offer customized education to parents whose children suffer from challenges, such as sensory processing disorder, and work to help parents manage the transition from home to clinic. For example, dry brushing a child’s gums at home may be helpful in decreasing oral discomfort during the visit. Once we find what works best for your child, we ensure that we offer treatment that is in line with their needs, and we continue to evolve those techniques as your child grows and their needs change.
Our specialty in helping children feel comfortable and calm at the dentist benefits any family member that experiences some degree of anxiety during a clinic visit. Our personable approach is aimed at making you feel heard and understood.
Whether you visit the Dentist every six month as recommended, or if you haven’t been to the Dentist in years, we want to help you gain and maintain good oral health.
Working with Your Busy Schedule
In a family with several children, it can be difficult to schedule regular appointments at the dentist for each member of the family without requiring time away from other important responsibilities and activities. We know that as a parent you are already dealing with heavy demands on your time. In order to speak to your scheduling needs, we offer late appointments which can be helpful in maintaining a work/school schedule, and we even offer group bookings when they can be scheduled far enough in advance. A typical family of four who sees the dentist every six months will require a minimum of eight appointments per year – and that’s just preventative maintenance. More time will need to be dedicated to dental appointments if there are any procedures required. Group appointments offer families the ability to reduce the number of appointments required by serving each member of the family on the same day. One long appointment cuts down on scheduling issues and travel time, and decreases stress for families.

Things you Should Ask Your Family Dentist
When you are considering a family dentist for your family, we recommend asking questions that will provide you with more information about the clinic and their offerings.
- Ask about the scope of services offered by this clinic. What services are referred outside of the clinic?
- Ask your dentist whether they use modern technology, like 3D imaging and digital X-rays to decrease exposure to radiation.
- Find out whether their clinic offers emergency appointments if required – you need to know where to go if an emergency occurs.
- If someone in your family is very anxious, ask your dentist what kind of sedation they offer, such as oral sedatives or laughing gas.
- If you have dental insurance, find out if the clinic will direct bill. If you need to pay upfront and submit the expenses to your insurance company, this could affect your decision.
- If there are several dentists at the clinic, consider asking whether they share patients or if your family will see the same dentist routinely. It can be difficult to develop a relationship with your dentist if you see them irregularly.
