The History and Heart of Mill Woods

Located in the southeast part of Edmonton, Mill Woods is one of the city’s most vibrant and diverse neighbourhoods. With a rich history, a strong sense of community, and a welcoming atmosphere, Mill Woods has become home to generations of Edmontonians from all walks of life. At D&D Dental Clinic, we are proud to serve the residents of Mill Woods and surrounding areas, offering trusted dental care that reflects the same values of community, care, and connection that make this area so special.
From Farmland to a Thriving Urban Community
The area now known as Mill Woods has deep historical roots. Before becoming part of Edmonton, this land was used by Indigenous communities for hunting, gathering, and trading. In the early 1800s, it was part of the rich agricultural landscape that surrounded the growing Fort Edmonton. The name “Mill Woods” originates from the local saw and grist mills that once operated near Mill Creek, which played a key role in the region’s early economy.
Mill Woods officially began to take shape in the 1970s as Edmonton expanded southward to meet the needs of its growing population. Designed as a self-contained community, it was planned with residential, commercial, educational, and recreational spaces all within close reach. This thoughtful design made Mill Woods one of Edmonton’s most accessible and family-friendly areas.
A Mosaic of Cultures and Traditions
What truly sets Mill Woods apart is its incredible cultural diversity. The community is home to people from across the globe, including large South Asian, Filipino, African, and Middle Eastern populations, as well as long-time Canadian families. This blend of cultures has shaped Mill Woods into a welcoming and inclusive neighbourhood where everyone feels at home.
Local cultural events, such as the Mill Woods Canada Day Celebration, bring thousands of residents together each year to enjoy live entertainment, international food, and family-friendly activities. The area is also home to a wide range of cultural centres, places of worship, and community organizations that celebrate Edmonton’s multicultural identity.
